THE BREAD GIVERS
This quiz is to be an analysis of the book ?the bread givers? which explains why it
is significant in understanding the experiences of a certain group of immigrant women in
a particular place and time in American history. READ THE INTRODUCTION BY
ALICE KESSLER-HARRIS CAREFULLY. The editor tells you about the author, and
how her experiences influenced her book, and the editor gives you the major issues that
you should look for when reading and discussing the book.
Kessler-Harris writes ?The road to becoming a person lay through the dangerous
territory of Americanization Yezierska is at her best when she describes the anguished
journey? (p. xxiv). Think about this statement. How does Sara Smolinksy feel about
being an immigrant? What are the gender expectations which her Eastern European
Jewish culture holds for her? How do they clash with her new American home? How
does she deal with them? Kessler-Harris writes ?the struggle out of poverty, never easy,
posed for women a unique problem.? (p. xxvii). Think about why this is true.
Other important issues to think about:
Women & Family/Marriage
Expectations of women
Sara?s reactions
These are just some ideas to get you thinking. Your paper needs to be a coherent
analysis of the book. Use the Introduction to help you focus on issues. DO NOT RETELL
THE PLOT ? THIS IS NOT A BOOK REPORT. I know the plot. I want to know what the
book teaches you about women?s history ? why did I assign it to you? What do you think
I wanted you to learn from it?
Use those thoughts to form a thesis and then build your
response.
Do not use any information from Wikipedia or history websites or any other
source for this paper. This is YOUR analysis. Refer only to the book. THE BREAD GIVERS
