COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP

According to the article service learning is when a student or worker participate in an
organized service activity that meets community needs. Bringle, R.G., & Hatcher, J.A. (2012).
The service activity will help gain appreciation to personal values and civic responsibility.
Service-learning, an American term, has come to be known too as community-based learning,
work-based learning, community engagement, community outreach, and has even fallen under
the umbrella of civic engagement. Baca, I. (2012). Everyone benefit when there is a partnership
between the students and community working towards supporting service learning. These
partnerships will brace the results in enlightening goals and better placement within the
community. Partnerships of learning gives better results of student support. The schools that are
involved in these partnerships has high excellence and stimulating actions for the students. Some
of the challenges that students face is time consuming being that students also have school and
personal life to deal with this can become overwhelming. Another challenge could be that
students may be put in a position that they’re not comfortable with. Meaning that they will be
forced to step out of their comfort zone. It is my pleasure to present to you Bank of America as a
potential partnership of the newly service learning program within many cities and states.
Bank of American is partner with popular museums all over the United States. Which
includes benefits for account holders to attend the partner museums for free once a year with few
qualifications and identifications. Another affiliation is Arts and cultural institutions throughout
the world to provide vital support. Bank of America Merrill Lynch and HSBC have partnered
with the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) to develop a prototype solution
for blockchain trade finance. The new technology could “change the way businesses around the
world trade with each other,” according to HSBC. Crichton, M. (2016). BOA supports the
African American History and Cultural in Washington D.C. BOA is partner with Khan Academy
in the financial education department by providing free financial education to students. Also,
they support World Wildlife Fund which is our global conservation efforts. Bank of America
contributes to WWF for each new qualifying credit card and checking account opened and
activated. Although Bank of America no longer has sponsorship plans for the Charlotte Hornets
it will continue to work with the NBA franchise on community work. Bank of America may
have many affiliates with different companies and franchises it should provide more financial
advice and education on the worlds financial issues and how to deal with them.
Most of Bank of America volunteers comes from its employees. BOA volunteers
contribute hours to help address community needs from mentoring, building affordable homes
for low income citizens, and packaging and preparing food for the hungry. Sometimes volunteers
donate money to a giving campaign. When Bank of America employees dedicate their free time
and energy to volunteering they are giving a money grant. The amount of the money grant that is
giving determines the amount of time volunteered. Service Learning and Volunteering has some
similarities, but they have different purposes. Service Learning is a combination of both
volunteering and servicing. Service learning is performing non-paid activities with the study and
experience towards a college or school education. Volunteering is a non-paid activity with the
intentions on giving back to the community. The benefits for students is gaining a hands-on
experience so they can go into the workforce with ideas instead of only knowledge.
In conclusion Bank of America is a successful financial institution that gives back to
many causes along with volunteer and service learning. Arts and cultural is a main investment
that BOA has along with investing into students who is schooling in the financial field. They also
have employees who gives back by investing time to help feed hunger and build homes for those
who isn’t financially able to provide regular housing. Even for those who doesn’t physically get
involved can donate cash to a giving organization that provide for those in need. Volunteering is
an activity that involves free help for the community or an organization that is paying employees
to perform free community service for the community. Service learning is similar, but it is for
education purposes. SL provides a venue to achieve experiential learning (Petkus, 2000). As
mentioned earlier if a student come overcome the physical involvement, which may take up time
because service learning just isn’t some project you can do at the library it is the physical
activities to gain hands on experience, they will succeed as a service learner.
