Scholar Spotlight
READ 3355
Please be sure to include the following seven (7) components:
I. Visual Representation: Thirty minute (30) presentation using
PowerPoint, Prezi, or whatever software you’d like to use to share what you
have learned about your chosen scholar(s). NOTE: Points will be deducted
for presentations shorter than 15 minutes and longer than 25 minutes (not
including Q & A—approximately 5 minutes).
• Please practice/rehearse before you present.
• Also, upload your visual representation on the Monday (@ noon)
before you present, so others may have the opportunity to print if they
choose to do so. If you do not make that deadline, please consider
bringing copies to pass out to the class the day of your presentation for
your classmates to make notes. Class handouts for your scholar
spotlight are required (uploaded/electronic or hard copy).
• All visuals must be uploaded in the discussion forum on Blackboard by
the Friday after your oral presentation for your classmates to add to
their portfolio. This may be a PDF version.
II. Highly interactive presentation that involves the audience and/or elicits
participation. Engaging! I encourage a “hands-on” activity or strategy.
III. Background: Biographical (personal) and professional (career) information
about your scholar(s).
IV. Books and/or articles written by or about the scholar, include topics
of interests to the scholars. NOTE: Be sure you have read a sampling of their
work and have them as an additional visual for your presentation. You need to
know the scholar’s position on reading and adolescents. What is their area of
expertise? (If the scholar has written any books, you may display some of
them during your presentation.)
V. TWO articles (in addition to textbook chapter) to share with the class during
your presentation. Also, be sure to upload in the discussion thread with
your visual (in roman numeral one above) before your presentation by the
Monday (@ noon) before your presentation. Aim to find articles that discuss
English and reading or English and reading and writing. They should
definitely address adolescent literacy.
VI. READ aloud an excerpt from one of the texts. This should only be an
excerpt and take up only 3-5 minutes of your presentation.
Application: How can it be used in the secondary English/ELA
SPECIAL NOTE: ALSO, please upload a copy of your visual representation (PPT or
Prezi) used for your presentation to the actual assignment for me to grade.
