EEC 546
Online Class
03.06.2018
This week, class will be divided into three parts:
• To prepare for the Positive Personal Vocational Profile (PPP) assignment that will be
due at the end of the semester.
• To begin to develop a PPP for yourself
• To delve into the Career Development Phases
Part One:
In order to prepare for the PPP assignment that will be due at the end of the semester:
The first item to read is a web-based article entitled The Vocational Profile and the Profile
Meeting: A Process Not a Form by Melinda Mast and Michael Callahan or Marc Gold &
Associates (http://ruralinstitute.umt.edu/transition/art_vocationalprofile.asp). Creating a
profile should not be merely completing a form, but rather it is the process of gathering the
information. This brief article discusses the use of person-centered planning. For the purposes
of your assignment when you work with the young person or partner, while you may not be
able to do person centered planning, you need to use person-centered thinking throughout the
process.
Please read the following article to provide you with an overall background on the process. Dr.
Tilson is a national leader on the development and use of positive personal profiles. This article
describes profiles’ use, common components, and an example of a template:
https://www.dol.gov/odep/ietoolkit/publications/501.pdf
Part Two:
Please review the template for “EEC 546 Self PPP” (#1). We will begin to look at different types
of assessments that may be used when developing a PPP. In order to better understand the
process, you will be taking many of these assessments yourself and entering the results in the
grid.
• You may use this template “as is” or you may design a template that incorporates all
aspects in a different format.
• You may ADD TO this grid based on the readings you just completed above but you may
not remove any aspects.
You have already completed the first assessment when you visited PA Career Zone to complete
the Interest Profiler and obtained a Holland Code. When you took this assessment, you were
required to create an account. Please revisit your results in https://www.pacareerzone.org/
and add information that you were able to obtain with this assessment, into the appropriate
location on the grid. You should add your results, along with any additional information
available in terms of identified careers that have been recommended based upon your results.
Last week you completed an activity regarding your Values. These results should be added to
your PPP as well. This does not need to be submitted at this point however, we will continue to
add to this as we get more in depth into different types of assessments so please do not put off
completion of each section as we move forward.
Part Three:
One of the most beneficial pieces of information that I gained as I learned about the overall
transition process, was that of “Career Phases”. Interestingly, the Pennsylvania Career,
Education and Work Standards also mirror the Career Phase approach:
http://www.education.pa.gov/K-12/PACareerStandards/Pages/default.aspx
Please read the following:
#2 – Career Development as a Context for Transition Assessment
#3 – Career Development Checklist
When considering assessment data and recommendations regarding student needs in terms of
preparation for employment, the Career Development Checklist can almost be used as a type of
scope and sequence guide to help determine at which point the student may be and where
they may need to head next. In the next class meeting, we will begin to very closely examine
the IEP and the Transition Grid portion. Keep this checklist in mind as we discuss present level
information in relation to the transition process.
