1 Corinthians 15 Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (RSVCE)
The Resurrection of Christ
15 Now I would remind you, brethren, in what
terms I preached to you the gospel, which you
received, in which you stand, 2 by which you are
saved, if you hold it fast—unless you believed in
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I
also received, that Christ died for our sins in
accordance with the scriptures, 4 that he was buried,
that he was raised on the third day in accordance
with the scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to
Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to
more than five hundred brethren at one time, most
of whom are still alive, though some have fallen
asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the
apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he
appeared also to me. 9 For I am the least of the
apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I
persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of
God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was
not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than
any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of
God which is with me. 11 Whether then it was I or
they, so we preach and so you believed.
The Resurrection of the Dead
Now if Christ is preached as raised from the dead,
how can some of you say that there is no
resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no
resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been
raised; 14 if Christ has not been raised, then our
preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We
are even found to be misrepresenting God, because
we testified of God that he raised Christ, whom he
did not raise if it is true that the dead are not
raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ
has not been raised. 17 If Christ has not been raised,
your faith is futile and you are still in your
sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in
Christ have perished. 19 If for this life only we have
hoped in Christ, we are of all men most to be pitied.
But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead,
the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For
as by a man came death, by a man has come also
the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die,
so also in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But each in
his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his
coming those who belong to Christ. 24 Then comes the
end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father
after destroying every rule and every authority and
power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his
enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be
destroyed is death. 27 “For God has put all things in
subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “All
things are put in subjection under him,” it is plain
that he is excepted who put all things under
him. 28 When all things are subjected to him, then the
Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all
things under him, that God may be everything to
every one.
Otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized
on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at
all, why are people baptized on their behalf? 30 Why
am I in peril every hour? 31 I protest, brethren, by my
pride in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I
die every day! 32 What do I gain if, humanly speaking,
I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not
raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we
die.” 33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good
morals.” 34 Come to your right mind, and sin no more.
For some have no knowledge of God. I say this to
your shame.
The Resurrection Body
But some one will ask, “How are the dead raised?
With what kind of body do they come?” 36 You foolish
man! What you sow does not come to life unless it
dies. 37 And what you sow is not the body which is to
be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some
other grain. 38 But God gives it a body as he has
chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body. 39 For
not all flesh is alike, but there is one kind for men,
another for animals, another for birds, and another
for fish. 40 There are celestial bodies and there are
terrestrial bodies; but the glory of the celestial is
one, and the glory of the terrestrial is
another. 41 There is one glory of the sun, and another
glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for
star differs from star in glory.
So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is
sown is perishable, what is raised is
imperishable. 43 It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in
glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in
power. 44 It is sown a physical body, it is raised a
spiritual body. If there is a physical body, there is
also a spiritual body. 45 Thus it is written, “The first
man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam
became a life-giving spirit. 46 But it is not the spiritual
which is first but the physical, and then the
spiritual. 47 The first man was from the earth, a man
of dust; the second man is from heaven. 48 As was
the man of dust, so are those who are of the dust;
and as is the man of heaven, so are those who are of
heaven. 49 Just as we have borne the image of the
man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the
man of heaven. 50 I tell you this, brethren: flesh and
blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does
the perishable inherit the imperishable.
the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the
mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass
the saying that is written:
Lo! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but
we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the
twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the
trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised
imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53 For this
perishable nature must put on the imperishable, and
this mortal nature must put on immortality. 54 When
“Death is swallowed up in victory.”
“O death, where is thy victory?
O death, where is thy sting?”
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the
law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory
through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast,
immovable, always abounding in the work of the
Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in

Revelation 20-22 Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (RSVCE)
The Thousand Years
20 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven,
holding in his hand the key of the bottomless pit and
a great chain. 2 And he seized the dragon, that
ancient serpent, who is the Devil and Satan, and
bound him for a thousand years, 3 and threw him into
the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, that he
should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand
years were ended. After that he must be loosed for
a little while.
Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those
to whom judgment was committed. Also I saw the
souls of those who had been beheaded for their
testimony to Jesus and for the word of God, and who
had not worshiped the beast or its image and had
not received its mark on their foreheads or their
hands. They came to life, and reigned with Christ a
thousand years. 5 The rest of the dead did not come
to life until the thousand years were ended. This is
the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is he who
shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second
death has no power, but they shall be priests of God
and of Christ, and they shall reign with him a
thousand years.
Satan’s Doom
And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will
be loosed from his prison 8 and will come out to
deceive the nations which are at the four corners of
the earth, that is, Gog and Magog, to gather them
for battle; their number is like the sand of the
sea. 9 And they marched up over the broad earth and
surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved
city; but fire came down from heaven and
consumed them, 10 and the devil who had deceived
them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone
where the beast and the false prophet were, and
they will be tormented day and night for ever and
The Dead Are Judged
Then I saw a great white throne and him who sat
upon it; from his presence earth and sky fled away,
and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the
dead, great and small, standing before the throne,
and books were opened. Also another book was
opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were
judged by what was written in the books, by what
they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead in it,
Death and Hades gave up the dead in them, and all
were judged by what they had done. 14 Then Death
and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is
the second death, the lake of fire; 15 and if any one’s
name was not found written in the book of life, he
was thrown into the lake of fire.
20.3 The destruction of the dragon must coincide in time with that of the beast (19.20), so that the first resurrection with the reign of the
martyrs refers to the revival and expansion of the church after the years of persecution.
Revelation 20:9 Other ancient authorities read from God, out of heaven, or out of heaven from God
The New Heaven and the New Earth
21 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for
the first heaven and the first earth had passed away,
and the sea was no more. 2 And I saw the holy city,
new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from
God, prepared as a bride adorned for her
husband; 3 and I heard a great voice from the throne
saying, “Behold, the dwelling of God is with men. He
will dwell with them, and they shall be his
people, and God himself will be with them; 4 he will
wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death
shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning
nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things
have passed away.”
And he who sat upon the throne said, “Behold, I
make all things new.” Also he said, “Write this, for
these words are trustworthy and true.” 6 And he said
to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega,
the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give
water without price from the fountain of the water of
life. 7 He who conquers shall have this heritage, and I
will be his God and he shall be my son. 8 But as for
the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted, as for
murderers, fornicators, sorcerers, idolaters, and all
liars, their lot shall be in the lake that burns with fire
and brimstone, which is the second death.”
Vision of the New Jerusalem
Then came one of the seven angels who had the
seven bowls full of the seven last plagues, and spoke
to me, saying, “Come, I will show you the Bride, the
wife of the Lamb.” 10 And in the Spirit he carried me
away to a great, high mountain, and showed me the
holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from
God, 11 having the glory of God, its radiance like a
most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It
had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the
gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of
the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were
inscribed; 13 on the east three gates, on the north
three gates, on the south three gates, and on the
west three gates. 14 And the wall of the city had
twelve foundations, and on them the twelve names
of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
And he who talked to me had a measuring rod of
gold to measure the city and its gates and
walls. 16 The city lies foursquare, its length the same
as its breadth; and he measured the city with his
rod, twelve thousand stadia; its length and breadth
and height are equal. 17 He also measured its wall, a
hundred and forty-four cubits by a man’s measure,
that is, an angel’s. 18 The wall was built of jasper,
while the city was pure gold, clear as glass. 19 The
foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with
every jewel; the first was jasper, the second
sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20 the
fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh
chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the
tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth
amethyst. 21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls,
each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the
street of the city was pure gold, transparent as
And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is
the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. 23 And the
city has no need of sun or moon to shine upon it, for
the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the
Lamb. 24 By its light shall the nations walk; and the
kings of the earth shall bring their glory into it, 25 and
its gates shall never be shut by day—and there shall
be no night there; 26 they shall bring into it the glory
and the honor of the nations. 27 But nothing unclean
shall enter it, nor any one who practices abomination
or falsehood, but only those who are written in the
Lamb’s book of life.

The River of Life
22 Then he showed me the river of the water of life,
bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and
of the Lamb 2 through the middle of the street of the
city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of
life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit
each month; and the leaves of the tree were for the
healing of the nations. 3 There shall no more be
anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the
Lamb shall be in it, and his servants shall worship
him; 4 they shall see his face, and his name shall be
on their foreheads. 5 And night shall be no more; they
need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be
their light, and they shall reign for ever and ever.
And he said to me, “These words are trustworthy
and true. And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the
prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants
what must soon take place. 7 And behold, I am
coming soon.”
Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy
of this book.
Epilogue and Benediction
I John am he who heard and saw these things. And
when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship
at the feet of the angel who showed them to
me; 9 but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am
a fellow servant with you and your brethren the
prophets, and with those who keep the words of this
book. Worship God.”

recompense, to repay every one for what he has
done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and
the last, the beginning and the end.”
Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they
may have the right to the tree of life and that they
may enter the city by the gates. 15 Outside are the

I warn every one who hears the words of the

are described in this book.
He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am
