CRJU 3168 Group Case Presentation
The Capstone assignment for this course will consist of a group narrated case presentation based on the publicly released documents on the Michael Brown case. The material available is extensive and will be available from the first day of class. The presentation will be due NLT 2359/11:59 PM on the due date per the Schedule at a Glance in the syllabus.
Throughout the course we will be discussing the framework of the basic principles of Forensic Sciences, the principles of Crime Scene Investigation, and the importance of proper techniques. While the Michael Brown case is a police officer involved shooting, the case did not start with a chance encounter in the middle of Canfield Dr. in Ferguson, MO. The publicly released documents represent a large amount of raw investigative material, to include witness statements, police reports, forensic reports, crime scene photos and grand jury transcripts, that students can examine from the perspective of an investigator.
Students will break into four (4) groups of five (5). Members of each group will coordinate the work process between themselves and turn in a consolidated product. Each student will turn in a peer evaluation on each member of their group to get credit for their work. Each case briefs should contain, at a minimum, a Background Summary, Investigative Challenges, Photography, Physical Evidence, Other Types of Evidence and Conclusions. Students can use the media of their choice. Students can use video recording and editing software as well as PowerPoint to build the brief and incorporate audio that walks the viewer through your brief. Microsoft provides
instruction for adding narration to PowerPoint slide.
Students may draw on textbook material as well as other sources related to investigative procedures and issues. Discussions throughout the course can also provide opportunities for new sources.
