Values and belief are learned from the way we are raised, religious beliefs, and the environments in which we grew up in. I believe most times we immediately think; “What would I do? How would I handle this?” Versus ethically what should be done and how should it be done. For example, I work with Medicare, and I see claims all the time that are over billed. To me some of these are usually cases where a provider belief may have kicked instead of what services are medically necessary. In a case like this they would most likely go through the appeals process to prove medically necessity. 

I believe a change in values or ethics happens as we grow and learn. A lot of changes come as we age. Again, a lot of who people are and what they believe is based on religion, environment, and how we are raised. As you get older you may realize some of those things hold no value or show ethics and morals. Some of those things may work personally but not necessarily ethically. As I’ve grown older, I learned that there are things I grew up learning that I do not agree with today nor would I make most decisions let alone ethical decision based on them.

There are multiple values that impact someone’s ethical decision-making. For instance, our culture, personal experiences, and religious believes can all contribute to our individual ethic compass that guides our day-to-day decision making. One example of this can be how physicians treat for and care for patients. All physicians take the Hippocratic Oath which states that first and fourth most, do no harm. Even though a physician might not agree with the patient on every decision, it is still the physician’s priority to place the overall health of patient in front of their own personal individual values. 

I believe that life experience and education can change an individual’s values or ethics. Speaking for myself, I have discovered the more I am in school, the more I am valuing a higher education. Even though I am pursuing my second bachelor’s degree, I still get into slumps of not being motivated or questioning why I am doing this. However, I do realize that this degree will open other opportunities for myself, and I do value the future opportunities this will provide for me.
